Levanto, Italy - Saturday, July 1, 2006

Levanto, Italy

This small coastal town is just what we needed after the hustle and bustle of Rome. Traveling from Rome to Levanto took us about 5 hours by train, 6 if you count the hour we waited in the train station (check the schedule in advance and you can save time).

We could easily have spent the remainder of our trip in this wonderful town, but 3 nights is all we could spare lounging on the sandy beaches doing basically nothing, instead of taking in the history of Venice, Florence, etc. Don't get me wrong, sight seeing is fun, but 4 days in Rome really took its toll on us.

The food in Levanto has been great. If you are on a budget, the Focaccerie Il Falcone is really good and inexpensive, 5-10 euros for the two of us including drinks. We stopped in here for our 1.5 liter of water every morning and afternoon, only 1.30 euros. Best of all, the Il Porticciolo Gelateria is just 50 meters away, a perfect stop 2, 3, or 4 times a day.

The first day we used the free beach, located on the left side of the beach all the way at the end. On the second day we splurged and paid 16 euros for a day of beach going under an umbrella, it included two reclining beach chairs and access to their showers and bathrooms. This is a full day rate, so you can come and go as you please and your seats are numbers, so nobody will take them. Either way, the sand is great and the water is, well? the Mediterranean, it's perfect, lol.

We had a tough time getting a reservation in Levanto, be sure to book in advance. July is a very busy month for this otherwise quiet town; it's also the hottest month. I recommend finding a place with air conditioning if you travel in July and you plan to get any rest at night. We stayed at a British own place called Hotel Nazionale. It's a bit spendy at 140 euros per night, but they have air conditions, good breakfast for Europe standards, and wireless internet in the lobby (it's unsecured, so just hook up and surf away).

Our stay in Levanto has been wonderful, we'll definitely return on our next trip to Italy.

Sorry we didn't include more pictures, we spent so much time relaxing we forgot to take many.
