Back in Rome - Sunday, August 20, 2000
After Florence I caught a nice high speed train back to Rome.This time I was staying in a supposedly nicer hotel near or even in the Vatican city. Of course, I didn't have much luck with hotels in Rome - when I got there I was informed that the airconditioning was broken so I could either choose a different hotel or get a discount. I was feeling a bit spent up so I decided to stay with the discount - what a mistake. I thought surely it can't be that bad at night - there was a fan in the room afterall. The fan wasn't very quiet and it was soooo hot and sticky. I think Ig ot up about 5 times in the night to have a cool shower which cooled me down enough to sleep for a while.
The next day was my last day in Italy with a flight in the evening. I made the mistake I always make and got a flight in the evening and spent all day just wanting to be on my way home.
I wandered round St Peters and went into the Vatican musuem. I found the museum to be a bit repulsive to be honest - the amount of wealth on display for a church (I'm not religious) when there's people suffering in the world that the church is supposed to care about.... Anyway, I got to see the Sistine chapel but it was so crammed full of people I didn't stay long.
I had one last look around the Forum and then got the train back to the airport. All in all it was an ejoyable but busy trip. I got to see an amazing amount of things. Next time I think I would consider going there in Spring when the weather is a bit cooler and the tourist spots aren't quite as busy.
