Laguna de Apoyo - Thursday, August 26, 2004
(For those non-Spanish speakers, the name of this great little place means "The Lagoon of Support". Not quite sure what is supporting what- but that's the name anyway).
This is an idyllic lake near the town of Masaya- about a one or two hour bus ride from Managua. Laguna de Apoyo is formed by a long dormant volcano that has filled with rain water over the eons, and (amazingly) has quite a diversity of fish. The water is brilliantly clear and warm, just the place to pass a couple of days and escape the stiffling heat of Managua.
We spent a couple of days at the research center there, which has nice little moldy rooms for a few Cordobas, and serves pretty good food.
The best way to see the lake is by kayak, which is available from the research center for a few more Cordobas. Along the lakeshore are several little eateries with the usual fare- but the best entertainment was from the local transvestites who come to the lake in fair numbers to splash one another and generally flaunt their indeterminate genders. A fun time had by all-
