center of the world - Thursday, July 15, 2004
...and NY, NY really is the center of it all. My older sister lives in Queens, so this summer mom and I stayed for a few weeks.
We started at the bottom of Manhattan and each day criss-crossed the island until we eventually were a little north of Harlem.
Manhattan is where it's happening and it is really easy as it is the only borough laid out on a grid.
The terms uptown & downtown where invented in Manhattan, as 'uptown' means going up the hill - north and 'downtown' is south or down the hill.
Really there is so much to do as you could imagine...but it is a very cool place. I never felt unsafe and people are friendly when approached them.
Highlights:
Metropolitan Museum of Art (must see)
Empire State Bldg
SoHo ('south of houston street')
Little Italy/China Town
'The Village'
Brooklyn Bridge
the Cloisters
Central Park
Also, went to the original CBGB's where all the cool band still play...
